Reflections on the Disintegration of Detroit

1900-29, Detroit was the Silicon Valley of its day, because Detroit was where the cheap mass produced automobile, purchased on installments thanks to consumer credit. Just as Steve Jobs invented the mass produced desktop computer, Detroit invented the motor car that any family that was not destitute could afford.  The Depression hit Detroit hard, but it boomed again in WWII with defence procurement.

But then four grim and consequential facts occured.
  • Detroit lost 300,000 people in the 1950s. All I know about that era was that the huge Packard plant closed. Detroit lost population in every subsequent decade;
  • There were terrible race riots in 1943 and 1967;
  • Detroit public schools became majority AA around 1965;
  • Between 1967 and 1972, Detroit experienced an explosive rise in murder, other violent crime, and narcotic use.
These four facts led to the worst episode ever of white flight ever.  When the plants built early last century reached their use-by date, they were replaced with plants built elsewhere in North America. People laid off in Detroit could apply for jobs at the new plants, but their UAW backgrounds were discriminated against. Detroit's population continued to fall, and the proportion of its population that was unemployable, thanks to functional illiteracy, drug use, and criminal records, rose and rose. It became impossible to find buyers or renters for more and more Detroit houses, so they were simply abandoned. There was no money to raze tens of thousands of abandoned houses and other buildings, so the city became blighted, which fueled more exodus, more crime, black as well as white flight, and more abandonment. When the Great Recession hit, Detroit had long been in a death spiral.

That Flint has lost half its population and is mostly ghetto, and that blight has begun in Saginaw and Toledo, prove that the problem is a regional one.

Value added by motor vehicle manufacturing in the USA is doing fine. The problem is that such manufacturing employed 1.1M people as recently as 2007, and now employs fewer than 800K. The people of Flint and Detroit are victims of a dramatic rise in auto industry labour productivity, and of their lack of marketable skills. One thing is certain: the ability to earn an upper middle class income on an assembly line, and the traditional very generous UAW benefits, are both history. The future is 40K/year on straight time, another 10K in years with overtime, free health insurance for employees only, and 401k retirement plans. Also, no jobs for people without some technical education, or with criminal records or drug histories.

There is no longer any economic or engineering reason to concentrate the manufacture of motor vehicles in SE Michigan, and that region will simply have to adapt to that fact.

These economic realities have stark consequences. Among the 3089 USA counties outside of Alaska, Wayne County Michigan (which contains Detroit but not its prosperous northern suburbs) ranked 137th in personal income per capita in 1969, and 1506th in 2012. Ranking states by personal income per capita, Michigan was 10th among the 48 continental states in 1929, and 34th in 2012. In 2012, Michigan was not the poorest state in the northeast, midwest and Plains, only because it was 0.5% ahead of Indiana. Michigan went from being 13% above the 1929 value for the entire USA, to 13% below the corresponding value in 2012. In disposable personal income per capita, Michigan ranked 12th in 1948, and 35th in 2012. In 1953, Michigan's per capita income was 121% of that for the USA as a whole. This was the highest value ever, except for WWII. In 1994-95, it was 101%; this was the last time Michigan's per capita income equalled or exceeded the USA average. Since 2007, Michigan's per capita income has been 87-88% of the USA average, the lowest values ever for this percentage. Over the past 60 years, the state of Michigan has experienced a near catastrophic economic decline, as the auto industry has deserted it for greener pastures.

My explanation and critique of gender feminism

You, like many people, are an equity feminist. Nearly all political movements pay lip service to equity feminism, much of which is the law in First World countries. Equity feminism has had important victories in the past: female suffrage, ending of all male university education, opening all careers to women. Disagreement with equity feminism is mostly confined to austere religious circles.

The people who savaged you are gender feminists. A common verbal touchstone of gender feminists is believing that women are an oppressed class, and that the oppressors are something they call "the patriarchy". Another verbal touchstone is talk of "rape culture". The gender feminist "makes a career" out of being a woman angry at the way "all women" are supposedly treated. The way my parents generation would describe gender feminists was to say "they always have a chip on their shoulders". Many gender feminists last century were lesbians, simply because they believed that being heterosexual amounted to "sleeping with the enemy".

Gender feminism sprang up in the 1960s, in the writings of Robin Morgan (founder of Ms magazine), Marilyn French, Gloria Steinem, Valerie Solanas, Kate Millet, Germaine Greer, and Shulamith Firestone. Gender feminism was an important social movement, 1965-1990, and has experienced something of a resurgence in social media, since about 2005 or so.

Gender feminism has male supporters. I believe that they are mistaken, but please do not sneer at them as traitors to their gender. They are probably in an intimate relationship with gender feminist women. Decent men tend to feel strong loyalty to the women they cuddle in bed, and this is normal and desirable, even if that noble sentiment sometimes takes men down misguided paths. Also, the writings of gender feminists can have intellectual appeal to men dissatisfied with the present social order. Gender feminism has attracted strong disagreement from the Men's Rights Movement, and from women, some of whom are ex gender feminists.

The terms "gender feminism" and "equity feminism" are due to Christine Hoff Sommers, an equity feminist as a young woman, a liberal Jew, and the mother of sons. Sommers decided 25 years ago that gender feminism is a sinister social movement. My view is that the only way the goals of gender feminism can become realities, is by a tyrannical state that dictates what occupations will pay and who gets what job. Gender feminism can become a reality only by putting on jackboots. A gender feminist world would not make optimal use of men's talents and abilities. The economy would stagnate or even decline outright. The proportion of children raised by single mothers would rise, as would the proportion of antisocial males. A gender feminist nation would eventually collapse, in a way similar to the disintegration of the USSR and Maoist China.

Gender feminism is too angry, too intellectual, and too anti-male to have much traction among everyday women. A vulgarisation of gender feminism that does have traction is the Gold Uterus Complex:
shrink4men.com/2011/05/17/does-your-wife-or-ex-wife-have-a-golden-uterus-complex-15-characteristics-of-the-golden-uterus/

Another real world manifestation of gender feminism is the Duluth Model, which has a Wikipedia entry.

Erin Pizzey, who had some gender feminist inclinations as a young woman and who founded the British Refuge movement, the first network of urban shelters for battered women, decided after some years that both genders were more or less equally guilty of domestic violence. When British gender feminists got wind of her change of heart, they made her feel so unwelcome that she and her children fled her native UK for a number of years. It is my understanding that Pizzey's memoirs are an important document in the ongoing critique of gender feminism.

To an American mother who revealed that she has decided to circumcise her son.

This mother pleaded with readers to not blame her and her husband.

******************************************************

American routine infant circumcision is not the fault of parents but of American medical education. American medical school profs and sexologists have refused for 100 years to do the obvious research that would enable us to know whether routine circumcision is a good or bad thing. East of the Rockies, most obgyns still perform RIC without effective anesthesia. This barbarity is entirely the fault of the American medical profession.

If your do not want your decision regarding your son questioned or criticised, then do not discuss the matter in social media. What we don't know, we can't talk about, whether for good or evil. When you reveal something in social media, you have, ipso facto, waved your natural law right of privacy.

I will now explain why your stated reasons for circumcising your son are mistaken. Phimosis does NOT affect as much as 10% of intact men. Most cases of phimosis can be cured by a few months of steroid ointment and gentle stretching. In nations where men take a daily shower and where phimosis is treated, penile cancer is quite rare. Inflammation and infection of the head of the penis and the foreskin are readily treated with Neosporin or antifungal ointments. UTIs are much more common in girls than intact boys. Girls get antibiotics; why not do the same for boys? There is no correlation between circumcision status and prostate cancer, once one controls for age and income. Prostate cancer is a disease of older men, and in the USA, old men are more likely to be intact.

The typical American hospital circumcision, when done without lidocaine and without allowing 15+ minutes for the lidocaine to have full effect, is barbaric. RIC is not a quick procedure. To understand circumcision, one must have endured it after the age of, say, 4. FGM that cuts into the clitoris goes beyond male circ, but many cultures do not go that far. FGM that limits itself to the clitoral prepuce and the labia minora is indeed comparable to male circ.

"...we are willing to put our child through a moment of discomfort for the benefits this procedure provides." Assuming that there are benefits. Europe and Japan do not circumcise routinely, and there is no evidence that those countries have worse urological or STD outcomes than the USA does.

"...we’re willing to put our child through a moment of discomfort for the benefits that vaccinations provide." Would you vaccinate your child knowing that vaccination could diminish his adult sexual pleasure and function, and/or that of his eventual spouse? I trust not. The possible adverse sexual outcomes of RIC are not well understood, because they have yet to be researched. When an American doctor circumcises a male infant, the doctor literally does not know what he is doing, and this is an unconscionable situation.

The only footnote to your article mentions the name Brian Morris. Morris is an Australian virologist and molecular biologist who taught in the medical school of the University of Sydney. He is not an MD, much less a pediatrician or urologist. He has written obsessively and tendentiously about the alleged benefits of RIC for 15 years. Morris's views have obtained considerable attention, thanks to Australian media, to his website, and to his having published a number of articles defending RIC. Morris is the only medical school prof on the planet who loudly and firmly defends RIC. The medical association of Australia and New Zealand does not endorse his views. Morris's mind is especially closed to the possibility that RIC can have an adverse effect on adult sexual pleasure and function.

American defenders of RIC are all professors of public health. The attitude of American medicine is not that circumcision is necessary or desirable, but that parents should be free to have it done if they prefer. This is a very curious stance indeed. It assumes that the typical USA couple has the sexual and urological sophistication required to make an informed decision about how their son's penis should look and function.

Among western societies, the USA has the highest %age of kids growing up in single parent homes.

Two posts in the same blog that, I think, shed a lot of light on how the War between the Genders has greatly harmed the USA and its future adults.

Atlas Shrugged has not proved prophetic about the economic realm. But it could yet prove prophetic in the realm of sex and reproduction.

The sweeping income tax reform I advocate

I had no idea that Congress was chewing over a sweeping tax reform bill, something that I do not wish to discourage. But the devil is in the details, of course, and nothing I've read goes into the details. A top rate of 25% is being mooted, but I rather doubt that a top rate that low can balance the budget. The USA needs to move to a deficit/GDP ratio averaging no more than 2% over the business cycle. The large peacetime deficits of Reagan, GWB and Obama don't solve any problems; they merely kick the can down the road.

I am confident that Congress is not deliberating something as radical as what I am about to describe. Levy a flat tax of 30% on all value added by business, all wages and interest paid by state & local governments and nonprofits, all private pensions resulting from investments made before the flat tax is enacted, and all monetary transfer payments, including Social Security. Making Social Security fully taxable would help keep it solvent. Then credit FICA & Medicare taxes paid on behalf of employees against flat tax liabilities. Hence FICA/Medicare payroll taxes would become earmarked income taxes. 35% is the current rate of corporate income tax for all but the smallest corporations, and was the top tax rate on personal income until 2013.

Pay all legal residents of the USA $4500/year. This is the demogrant, the detail that enables a flat tax to be progressive in effect. SSI payments would be reduced by the amount of the demogrant, and all refundable tax credits would be abolished; these two steps would save about $120B/year. There would be no marriage penalty. The demogrant, plus food stamps and section 8 rent subsidies, would end poverty in America. For a couple raising 1/2/3 children, the first $45000/$60000/$75000 of annual income would be free of all Federal tax. Hence most everyday American families raising children on annual incomes ranging from 40K to 70K, would receive demogrants exceeding the taxes they would pay.

A $4500 demogrant and a 30% flat rate would raise about $900B more than the present tax system, and thus largely eliminate the Federal deficit. A tax rate of 33.3% would enable increasing the demogrant to $6100, while still eliminating the deficit.

Business capital expenditures, including the cash cost of mergers, would be expensed in full in the period incurred. The proceeds from the sale of business assets would be included in the tax base. Hence the flat tax would tax capital gains realised by business on real assets and intellectual property. Tax losses would carry forward indefinitely, and accrue interest at the T-bill rate. This would end the depreciation of equipment and structures, as we've known them for 100 years. Hence this tax would tax business cash flows, not profits. The double taxation of stock dividends would end.

The fundamental advantage of this tax is that all revenue would be collected from payers, not recipients. Only payers would have to file a tax return. The only persons who would need to file a return are those who file schedules C and F at present. There would be one form for businesses, one for state & local government, and one for nonprofits. Each of these returns would be one page long. I do NOT claim that the IRS could be abolished, only radically downsized. Firms would still have an incentive to understate sales and overstate the cost of goods sold, and guarding against these would require that (a reformed!) IRS be eternally vigilant.

The resulting tax system would be described by a mere two numbers: a single tax rate, and the dollar amount of the demogrant. Hence this would be the most transparent tax system ever devised. The economic impact of such a tax system would be easy to reason through. I grant that the wealth effect of the demogrant, and the substitution effect of the flat rate, would both discourage labor supply by people with low human capital. I accept that about 5%-8% of American households would try to get by on demogrants, food stamps, and Medicaid. But the welfare trap would be less severe; when people improved their circumstances, they would lose their eligibility for food stamps, section 8 subsidies, and Medicaid, as at present. But they would not lose one cent of demogrant.

Guest post: an antifeminist manifesto

The following is a very long comment here on EP, by a woman antifeminist. It beautifully distills what I mean by antifeminism. The author did not grow up in the First World, and I suspect that that is why she is immune to the syren song of feminism.

*******************************************************************************************

Feminism has poisoned the relationship between women and men all over the western world. The results can be seen in the crashing marriage and birth rates, the number of children who grow up fatherless and the rise in the prison populations. Fathers are being decimated in the family courts, and being denied access to their children. Men are being demonized by feminist inspired advertising campaigns which encourage people to see men as violent brutes. Divorce courts are stripping men of their hard earned assets and turning them over to women even in cases when the wife ended the marriage. Men are routinely ridiculed and derided in advertising and movies and TV shows, where men are always portrayed as either idiots, creeps or brutes.

Men are being fired from their jobs and stripped of their livelihoods not because of anything they do but because they say something that a woman finds "offensive". Meanwhile women are free to make sexist remarks about men at their leisure and if fact are encouraged by society to do so. Men are being accused of sexual harassment if they make any non-physical approach to a woman that she does not appreciate. The definitions of rape and sexual assault are being expanded to cover many forms of consensual sex and the rapist is always the man, never the woman. A man convicted of rape can serve up to 12 years in prison. A woman who makes a false rape claim is unlikely to see the inside of a jail even if she has already ruined a man's life. A woman convicted of any crime worthy of a custodial sentence will receive 60% of the sentence a man gets and she will serve only 40%.

Boys in schools are falling behind because education systems are being feminized to the extent that being male is becoming a decided disadvantage, and boys are learning from primary school that being male is somehow wrong. The government funds special programs to make it easier for women to go to college and graduate, when in fact it is male students who are more in need of such programs. The emergency services have reduced their training standards in order to allow women to make the grade, making the army, fire-service and police forces less effective.

Women are eulogized for any achievement they make even if it has already been achieved by men and on the flip side, men's achievements are belittled and ridiculed. It is illegal across the EU to discriminate against women on the basis of gender. It is legal to discriminate against men in certain cases. Women are the beneficiaries of no end of special entitlements and affirmative action programmes that unfairly discriminate against men. There are violence against women campaigns almost every year which all ignore the fact that men are four times more likely than women to be the victims of violence. When a woman falls upon hard times, there are all kinds of advocacy groups and state supports available to her which are not available to men. When a man falls on hard times, there are no state housing subsidies, no advocacy groups, no talk shows championing his cause - nothing. That's why most homeless people and most suicides are men.

Anti-feminists are people from all walks of life both male and female who are tired of watching their communities being destroyed by this toxic ideology. Feminism has infected all of the political parties to a greater or lesser degree. That's no surprise. Feminism greatest coup was in convincing ordinary women that it represented their interests and it is of course in the interest of politicians to secure women's votes at election time. That's why decent people are angry.

All of these things are happening all over the western world but particularly in English speaking countries and it is being driven by feminism. Feminism has done a huge amount of damage to men, and it is becoming obvious that it is damaging women almost as much. It is sad that that is angering people only now. Feminists allege that we anti-feminists are uneducated. With all due respect, the shoe is on the other foot.
